For all he has accomplished in Hollywood, the actor is also super strict about keeping his family life private, so much so that he has taken extended breaks in-between projects.

Day-Lewis, who celebrates his 69th birthday today, has been married to wifeRebecca Millersince 1996. The two met while he was visiting her father, famed author Arthur Miller, in 1995 and the rest was history. The couple welcomed two sons together: Ronan in 1998 and Cashel 2002. The two boysjoined their older brotherGabriel-Kane, from Daniel's previous relationship with French actress Isabelle Adjani.

Following an eight-year break from filmmaking — he actuallyannounced his retirement after 2017'sPhantom Thread—the three-time Oscar winner came back in front of the cameras to collaborate with Ronan on 2025'sAnemone.The actor toldRolling Stonehe "had some residual sadness" about walking away from acting because he knew his second born would be entering the business.

"I knew Ronan was going to go on to make films, and I was walking away from that. I thought, wouldn’t it be lovely if we could do something together and find a way of maybe containing it, so that it didn’t necessarily have to be something that required all the paraphernalia of a big production,” he told the outlet.

“It was just kind of a low-level fear, [an] anxiety about re-engaging with the business of filmmaking. The work was always something I loved. I never, ever stopped loving the work.”

Though Daniel and his family have made public appearances together over the course of his decades-long career, those moments are few and in-between. Below, see rare photos of Daniel Day-Lewis with his wife and kids.

The Day-Lewises were joined by Sean Bean, who costarred alongside Daniel, during a Q&A later that evening.

Daniel shared that whilehe was compelled to return to acting for his son's debut, it doesn't necessarily mean he's fully out of retirement. But he was "really grateful" for the opportunity to be back in front of the camera.

When you're retired, "you're meant to just crawl away and die quietly," he said. But in this case, "I was at very low ebb and I thought, 'I'm doing this because I [didn't] really expect to find my way back to the appetite for this work again. And I did," he revealed.

At the same festival, the men of the hour also held a screening for the film. Asked if it was ever odd to have his son direct him inAnemone,Day-Lewis told PEOPLE, "Well, if I stepped outside of it to look in that way, yeah, I definitely would've probably been stopped in my tracks.”

“But luckily we were both so inside of the work, inside the story that we were trying to tell,” he continued. “Yeah, there were days on set that we looked at each other and just couldn't believe that we were actually getting to do this thing, but other than that we were just getting on with it. There wasn't time to think that way, luckily.”
